Monemvasia - Winery
The Monemvasia Wines was founded by George Tsibidis on September 20, 1997 at Monemvasia of Laconia. This initiative was part of a wider business plan with a clear objective: the revival of the Malvasia wine at its birth place. Work covered a number of activities from historical research, to vine search, vine growing ,wine making, bottling, distribution, promotion and trading. Malvasia wine dominated worldwide sales for 300 years from the 12th century and was a Greek national export product, although it is currently produced in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Madeira Croatia, California but until recently was not produced at its birthplace ( Malvasia is Monemvasia in Frankish). The Monemvasia Wines, with persistence and consistency, accompanied an adventurous journey of 12 years, studying the characteristics of local varieties, creating experimental vineyards, organizing an international scientific symposium with main subject the Malvasia wine of Monemvasia, conducted winemaking experiments with the Wine Institute and finally on July 23 2010 (the anniversary of the liberation of Monemvasia!) Malvasia wine was recognized (in 1125 sheet of government newspaper) as a Protected Designation of Origin for sweet white wine or liquer wine from sun dried grapes. In the field of winemaking Monemvasia Wines has created a modern winery processing grapes from Monemvasia region, producing branded products under the brand names: Maleatis, Kastropoliteia, Laloudi, Monemvasios, Assyrtiko, Kydonitsa, Asproudi, Anthosmias, Fileri Agiorgitiko, Moschofilero, Metropolis, 300, Monemvasia-Malvasia (the PDO wine Monemvasia - Malvasia 2010 of Monemvasia Wines was bottled for the first time at the end of 2012 after 2-year of aging-it will be commercially available in 2013).
