Top Greek organic wines of 2017

Consumer shifts to more "natural" products, i.e. organic, has understandably affected wine making. Organic wines (bio in Europe, organic in the United States) are made from organically grown grapes with limited use of additives during the winemaking process. We will not deeply analyze which additives are allowed and why, however usually much discussion is done around sulphites (mainly SO2 sulfur dioxide) that have a very important role in the winemaking process.

Sulfur dioxide is very important for the proper maintenance of wines and the prerequisites for an official organic wine characterization in Europe (and Greece) do not prohibit its use. The main concern in organic wine production is the achievement of a certified organic viticulture. This is not easy, considering the number of pets that may attack gripening grapes and the fact that the use of chemicals is specifically excluded for an organic certification.

There ia already a healthy market of certified organic wines in Greece, while there is also a concentrated effort with experimental wines in the direction of natural wines, avoiding the use of sulfur.
