Tinos Wines
The long-standing connection between Tinos and wine can be traced back to ancient times. The site where the icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered, and the Church of Evangelistria was built, was once home to a temple dedicated to Dionysus, the "God of Wine" , clearly demonstrating the islanders' reverence for winemaking.
Throughout history, viticulture and wine production have been central to the livelihood of Tinos locals. Tinian wine was praised by travelers during the Byzantine and Medieval periods and became a significant export product in the 19th century. Almost every family owned their own vineyards, which were highly valued. In the traditional Tinian homes, wine was stored in dark, cool courtyards in pots or oak barrels, where it was later enjoyed at the family table. Tinian wine has played a prominent role in daily life, serving as a dietary supplement, a tonic before fieldwork, or a celebratory drink at special occasions.
Although a decline in agricultural activity has impacted wine production for some time, the recognition of Tinos' winemaking potential has drawn more producers back to their roots. The unique Tinian terroir is reflected in the distinctive character of Tinos wines. Despite regional differences, the island's climate and soil shape their unique profile. Tinos is characterized by severe drought, which has historically driven farmers to work diligently to protect crops from erosion and reduce slopes. Vines are planted in a linear fashion and pruned to stay low to the ground, sheltered from the island's frequent strong winds.
Intense sunlight, mild air, and the island's granite soils contribute to the characteristic mineral taste of Tinian wines, while strong winds bring a touch of sea breeze. Tinian wines often have high acidity and robust aromas due to the cultivated grape varieties, such as Assyrtiko, Mavrotragano, Monemvasia, and Mandilaria. Efforts are being made to preserve and incorporate local winemaking grape varieties (Askathari, Koumari, Potamissi, and Rosaki) and produce high-quality wines, some of which we are pleased to present below.
