Thessaloniki Wines
The vineyards surrounding the second largest city in Greece spans a large area of Kalochori and Axios Delta with the remarkable nature preserve, a little further north in Lagada and mountainous Ossa, East, in the Sac and Lakes koronia and Volvi until Strymonikos Bay and Epanomi, on the cape, on the edge of Thermaikos. The terroir of each region varies considerably, however the continental climate of the region is characterized by intense temperature difference between day and night throughout the summer. The presence of winds contribute to reduced disease and maintaining good hygiene condition of the grapes. More specifically, on the coast of Thermaikos, in the vineyard of Epanomi, white varieties of Asirtiko, Malagouzia, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier and the Red Syrah, Merlot, Grenache Rouge, Limnio, Mavroudi, Mavrotragano are planted, in the mountains of the Prefecture, the vines spread out on the slopes of Vertiskos, with Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah been planted next to white cultivars of Athiri, Assyrtiko, Malvazia, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for the production of wines with a protected geographical indication (P.G.I.) slopes of Vertiskos. Finally in New Mesimvria Roditis is cultivated primarily, who is mixed with the white Zoumiatiko also for the production of white wine P.G.I. Mesembria.
