Meteora Wines
Meteora is one of the most mountainous regions of Greece, with vertical, breathtaking cliffs that abruptly land on the banks of the river Peneios (or Peneus). The area is popular with tourists due to the many clifftop monasteries partly made famous in the 1981 James Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only'. Viticulture in Meteora has always been widespread, however winemaking focused mostly on local market. That is changing now with the PGI Meteora zone being established in 2006. The varietal composition of wines from Meteora was primarily based on Roditi, Muscat of Hamburg and Batiki, as well as on some international varieties such as Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet. As the region's wines become more well know, the varieties used are also expanding creating some truly memorable wines.
