Lakonia Wines

In the southeastern part of Peloponnese, the terrain is rich and alternates between plains and valleys, hills and mountains. Here, Taygetos, the highest mountain of Peloponnese, strongly effects the microclimate of the region. Viticulture is an important part of the local economy, although it concerns, mostly, the spatial vinification which is destinated to personal consumption and disposition in bulk. In the past, however, from the port of Monemvasia, ships filled with the famous worldwide, mythical Malvasia wines were sailing. The number of varieties grown in the area is very high and they are mixed cultivated, making it extremely difficult to separate them. Some of the local varieties cultivated in Laconia are: Petroulianos, Kydonitsa, Thrapsa, Skylopnichtis and Smyrneiko, as also the more familiar Roditis, Athiri, Agiorgitiko, Mavroudi, Mantilaria, etc.
