Wines from Halkidiki
In Halkidiki of ancient times famous wines were produced, with evidence dating from the 5th century B.C. Nowadays vines exist in central Halkidiki, Sithonia and the region of Mount Athos. While on the sunny slopes of Mount Meliton, the dry climate and the beneficial moisture of the Aegean Sea favors the production of fine wines made from Limnio, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Asyrtiko, Roditi and Athyri. On the other hand, in almost all the monasteries of Mount Athos there is a long tradition in the art of viticulture and winemaking and in their vineyards with its mild climate, the ample sunshine, the mountain breeze and the sea breeze, a wide variety of grapes are now grown including the white Roditis, Athiri, Assyrtiko, Sauvignon Blanc and the red Limnio, Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache Rouge. In Central Halkidiki vineyards spanning low hills bordering the sea that balances the aura of extreme summer temperatures. Here, the varieties grown are many, both white and red, with major being the cultivation of Roditi, Sauvignon Blanc and the red Xinomavro, Grenache Rouge and Cabernet Sauvignon.
